Protein coffee vs. regular coffee in Bolingbrook: real numbers on protein, calories, sugar, and caffeine, and what actually changes between the two.

Fuel Up's protein coffee carries 20g of protein and 100 calories in every 24 oz cup — numbers a plain cup of coffee doesn't have. Here's what actually changes between the two, and what doesn't.

What actually changes between protein coffee and regular coffee

Regular coffee is coffee. Protein coffee is coffee blended with a protein base. That's the whole mechanism, and it's worth being precise about it, because the two drinks aren't interchangeable the way "just add protein" makes it sound.

A plain black coffee runs close to zero calories and carries no protein at all — it's caffeine, full stop. Fuel Up's protein coffee is a different drink built for a different job: 20g of protein, 100 calories, and under 2g of sugar, identical across all four flavors — House Blend, Mocha, Caramel Machiatto, and Chai.

One honest note, because the rest of our menu trains people to expect otherwise: protein coffee is the milk-based line. Every shake, smoothie, and bowl here is blended with water and ice, never dairy — coffee is the exception, and the milk is where the creaminess comes from. If dairy-free matters more to you than the coffee itself, a shake or smoothie is the better call.

House Blend, Mocha, and Caramel Machiatto are built on real espresso. Chai trades the espresso for warm cinnamon chai spices instead — same 20g of protein, its own lane for anyone who wants the ritual without the espresso.

Comparing the numbers side by side

Starbucks Grande Caramel Macchiato† Fuel Up protein coffee Typical flavored latte
Protein 10g 20g 0g
Calories 250 100 varies, often 250+
Sugar 33g under 2g 30–50g
Caffeine ~150mg (16 oz) ~160mg (24 oz)* varies by shop

† Grande, 16 oz, 2% milk — Starbucks' standard hot preparation. Nutrition source. * Per the team at the counter — not yet printed on the menu. Ask staff to confirm if you want it exact.

The sugar column is where most flavored coffee drinks quietly lose. A Starbucks Grande Caramel Macchiato alone carries 33 grams of sugar built into the flavor. Fuel Up's four coffee flavors get their flavor worked into the recipe instead, which is how our own Caramel Machiatto stays under 2g of sugar instead of turning into dessert — with double the protein of the drink it's named after.

On caffeine specifically: a Starbucks Grande Caramel Macchiato runs about 150mg, per the table above. Fuel Up's protein coffee runs around 160mg per 24 oz cup — roughly the same caffeine, in a cup with less than half the calories, a fraction of the sugar, and twice the protein. That number isn't printed on the menu yet, so confirm with the team at the counter if you want it exact. Chai is the one flavor that isn't built on espresso; its caffeine comes from the tea base instead.

Why protein coffee can hold you longer

Black coffee wakes you up and gives your stomach nothing to work with. Protein digests slower, so 20g of it in a cup tends to hold hunger off longer than caffeine alone ever will.

It's not a complete meal, though — think caffeine plus something real to run on, at 100 calories. If you're properly hungry, pairing one with mini protein donuts or a bowl covers the rest.

However you order it — hot, iced, or as a latte — the numbers hold. The prep changes; the protein, calories, and sugar printed on the menu don't.

Which one actually fits your morning

Protein coffee earns its spot any morning the cup in your hand is also doing the job of breakfast — before a shift, before a workout, or any morning where a second stop for food isn't happening. One cup carries 20g of protein and around 160mg of caffeine, covering what would otherwise take a coffee and a food stop both.

Same logic holds later in the day. A 3 PM coffee break is usually just caffeine and nothing else. Swap in a protein coffee at the same hour and you've added 20g of protein to a part of the day most people add nothing to but a vending machine snack.

Questions we get asked

Is protein coffee healthier than regular coffee?

It depends on what you need. Regular coffee runs close to zero calories and zero protein — it's just caffeine. Fuel Up's protein coffee carries 20g of protein and 100 calories in every 24 oz cup, closer to a light breakfast than a drink. Neither is the wrong answer; they're built for different jobs.

Will protein coffee keep me full longer than regular coffee?

Protein digests slower than black coffee alone, which is why 20g of it tends to hold you over in a way a plain cup doesn't. Regular coffee has no protein or fat to slow anything down, so it's just caffeine — nothing to run on afterward.

Does protein coffee taste different from regular coffee?

House Blend, Mocha, and Caramel Machiatto are built on real espresso, so they taste like coffee first. Chai swaps the espresso for warm cinnamon chai spices instead — same 20g of protein, its own flavor lane.

How much caffeine is in protein coffee compared to regular coffee?

More than a regular cup. An 8 oz brewed coffee runs about 96mg of caffeine; Fuel Up's protein coffee runs around 160mg per 24 oz cup, per the team at the counter — that number isn't printed on the menu yet, so confirm with staff if you want it exact. Chai is the one exception worth knowing: its caffeine comes from the tea, not espresso.

Is protein coffee dairy-free like Fuel Up's other drinks?

No — it's the one line on our menu that isn't. Every shake, smoothie, and bowl is water-and-ice based, but protein coffee gets its creaminess from milk. If dairy-free matters more than the coffee itself, a shake or smoothie is the better fit.

What should I check before picking a protein coffee?

Protein, calories, and sugar — all three are printed on our menu, not estimated. Anything that won't show you all three next to each other is asking you to guess.
