A breakfast smoothie should do two things: taste like fruit and actually hold you until your next meal. Most don't manage both — and no meal tests that promise harder than breakfast, when the gap to lunch is six hours long. Ours carry 20g of protein and 5–10g of fiber in a 24 oz cup, with no added sugar and under 300 calories — so the fruit does the flavor work and the protein does the rest.

Here's how to pick one, when to drink it, and what makes ours different.

Why we blend with water, not milk

Every Fuel Up shake, smoothie, and bowl base is blended with water and ice — never dairy. That's a deliberate choice, and it changes the drink in three ways.

It stays light. A milk-based smoothie sits heavy, especially before a workout or first thing in the morning. Ours doesn't.

It's dairy-free by default, which matters for a lot of our regulars.

And the fruit actually tastes like fruit. Milk mutes berries and mango; water lets them come through.

The one exception is the 32 oz Muscle Shake upgrade, which adds whey isolate, casein isolate, and BCAAs for 36g of total protein. Those are milk-derived, so if you're avoiding dairy, stick with the 24 oz.

What separates a breakfast smoothie from a milkshake in disguise

The word smoothie covers a lot of cups that don't deserve the morning shift. University Hospitals' dietitians point out that a half cup of orange juice alone brings about 15 grams of sugar, and a smoothie meant to stand in for a meal should carry 15 to 20 grams of protein — which is exactly the line most blends never cross.

That's the test we build to. Every 24 oz Fuel Up smoothie starts at 20g of protein — over the meal bar, not under it — with all sweetness from whole fruit rather than a juice pour, and the number printed on the menu where you can check it. A smoothie that passes both halves of that test is breakfast. One that passes neither is dessert with a straw.

Shake or smoothie?

This is the question we get most, and the honest answer is: pick by what you're craving, because the nutrition is close either way.

Item Protein Fiber Added sugar Price (24 oz)
Protein Shake — dessert flavors like S'mores, Churro, Reese's Cup 24g plant-based None, natural fruit sugar only $10.25
Protein Smoothie — fruit-forward like Green Machine, Very Berry, Dragon Fruitty 20g 5–10g No added sugar $10.25

Either one upgrades to a 32 oz Muscle Shake for $13.35, which adds BCAAs and 12g of extra protein.

When a smoothie fits your day

Breakfast that drinks like fruit. We open at 6 AM Monday through Friday, and a smoothie on the morning drive covers protein until lunch without a drive-through detour. On the tightest mornings, call (708) 556-9800 before you leave and it'll be waiting at the counter — or order through order.online for pickup — so the breakfast stop costs you about ninety seconds.

After a workout. 20g of protein and cold fruit is exactly what a hot session asks for. Make it a 32 oz Muscle upgrade for 32g on heavy training days.

The "I should eat more fruit" fix. Green Machine, Mango Pineapple, and Dragon Fruitty each carry 10g of fiber — the quiet reason you stay full.

Which blend for which goal

Most protein per cup: go 32 oz Muscle. If you want the highest protein on the whole menu, the Belly Buster hits 30g at 155 calories.

Most fiber: Green Machine, Mango Pineapple, or Dragon Fruitty at 10g.

Greens without a salad: Green Machine blends a boost of greens into a mango-pineapple base. It tastes tropical, not green.

Timeless order: Strawberry Banana. Never misses.

Something that turns heads: Dragon Fruitty, for the color alone.

A note on allergens

Our smoothie bases are dairy-free, but a few things are worth flagging plainly. The 32 oz Muscle upgrade contains milk-derived whey and casein. Bowls include granola and almonds. Protein donuts contain cinnamon. If you're ordering around an allergy, tell the team at the counter and they'll walk you through exactly what goes into your cup before you order.

Questions we get asked

Can a smoothie be my whole breakfast?

If it carries enough protein, yes. Dietitians put the bar for a meal smoothie at 15 to 20 grams of protein — every 24 oz Fuel Up smoothie clears it at 20g, with 5–10g of fiber doing the stay-full work behind it.

Smoothie or shake — which should I get?

Choose by craving. Fruit-forward means smoothie (Green Machine, Very Berry, Dragon Fruitty, Strawberry Banana); dessert-inspired means shake (S'mores, Churro, Reese's Cup). Protein is close either way — 20g versus 24g — so you really can't go wrong.

Do your smoothies have added sugar?

No. All the sweetness comes from real fruit. Every smoothie is listed at no added sugar and stays under 300 calories.

Are they dairy-free?

Our smoothie and bowl bases are blended with water and ice, never dairy. The one exception is the 32 oz Muscle Shake upgrade, which adds whey and casein isolate — those are milk-derived, so let us know if that matters for you.

How much protein can I get in one cup?

A 24 oz smoothie carries 20g. Upgrade to a 32 oz Muscle Shake for $13.35 and you're at 32g with added BCAAs. If you want the highest protein on our menu, the Belly Buster hits 30g at just 155 calories.

Why doesn't my homemade smoothie hold me like yours?

Usually protein. A home blend of fruit, juice, and ice tastes like breakfast but digests like fruit juice — most run under 5g of protein unless you measure a supplement in. Ours are built to a fixed recipe, so the 20g is in the cup every single time.

I've never been in. What should I order?

Tell us it's your first time — that's our favorite order. Give us your goal and the flavors you like, and we'll match you to the right cup in about 30 seconds.
