Are Wellness Shots Good for You?
Are wellness shots good for you? What to check on any shot, what's in the three we make fresh in Bolingbrook, and how many shots make sense in one day.

Are wellness shots good for you? They can be a smart little habit, but only if you know what's in the cup and how much of it. A shot is small, so the amounts matter more than the buzzwords on the label. Here's what to check on any wellness shot, what goes into the three we make in Bolingbrook, and how many actually make sense in a day.
What's really inside a wellness shot
Let's start with the basics. A wellness shot is a small, concentrated drink you finish in a couple of sips. Think of it as the espresso of the wellness world. Small cup. Big promise.
That promise is where things get fuzzy. "Wellness shot" isn't a set recipe. Two shops can sell drinks with the same name and almost nothing in common.
Most bottled shots on store shelves lean on the same short list:
- Roots and spices: ginger, turmeric, sometimes black pepper or cayenne
- Citrus: lemon or orange for a bright, sharp taste
- Vinegar: apple cider vinegar for a sour kick
- Added nutrients: vitamin C, zinc, B vitamins or probiotics
- Sweeteners: some brands add sugar to cover the bite
That last one is worth watching. A shot sweetened to taste like candy is a tiny dessert, not a wellness habit.
So what's in ours? We make three, and each one is built around a different job:
- Digestive: probiotics and 6g of fiber, at 15 calories
- Collagen: collagen, biotin and vitamins A, C and E, at 20 calories, with no sugar
- Immunity: 1,000mg of vitamin C, 10 mcg of vitamin D, 8mg of zinc and echinacea, at 15 calories
Each one is made when you order it, not poured from a bottle that's been sitting in a cooler. And each one is $5.10.
The menu calls the Digestive and Immunity shots digestive support and immune support. That's the honest way to say it. A shot supports a routine. It doesn't fix one.
Before you buy any wellness shot, run this quick check:
- Can you see what's in it, and how much of each thing?
- Is the sugar low, or is the sweetness doing most of the work?
- Was it made fresh, or bottled weeks ago?
- Does the label promise to detox or cure something? If so, skip it.
If you're grabbing one on the way home to Romeoville or Woodridge, those four questions take about ten seconds at the counter.
What the research actually backs
Here's the short version. The strongest thing research gives you about a wellness shot isn't a miracle. It's a number: how much of a nutrient is in the cup, and how that stacks up against what your body needs in a day.
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements publishes those daily amounts, and they make a shot label a lot easier to read. Here's how our Immunity shot lines up for adults:
| Nutrient | In one Immunity shot | Daily recommended amount | Daily upper limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vitamin C | 1,000mg | 75mg (women), 90mg (men) | 2,000mg |
| Vitamin D | 10 mcg | 15 mcg (ages 19 to 70) | 100 mcg |
| Zinc | 8mg | 8mg (women), 11mg (men) | 40mg |
Notice something? One shot covers more than a full day's vitamin C, about two-thirds of the vitamin D most adults need, and a full day's zinc for women. That's real, and you can check every number.
It also shows why more isn't better. The NIH puts the adult upper limit for vitamin C at 2,000mg a day, counting food, drinks and supplements together, and notes that going over it can upset your stomach. One Immunity shot is half of that. Two would hit the limit before you've eaten a single orange.
Quick tip from behind the counter: if you already take a multivitamin or a vitamin C supplement, read its label before you add an Immunity shot. Those numbers add up. If you'd like help sorting out what you already take, the shop runs personal nutrition coaching. Ask about it next time you stop in on Weber Road.
What about the other two? Probiotics, fiber, collagen and biotin don't come with a simple daily limit you can check the same way. So we stick to what's on the menu: what's in each shot and how much, and no promises about what it will do for your skin or your stomach.
That's the pattern with wellness shots in general. Where the numbers are clear, a shot is easy to judge. Where a label leans on big claims instead of amounts, be skeptical.
Consistency matters more than any single shot. A wellness shot is a sidekick, not the hero of the story. Real meals, water and sleep do the heavy lifting. The shot is a small extra on top.
Are wellness shots worth it? A realistic framework
Here's the honest answer. It depends on what you want a shot to do.
Most people expect one of two things. Either a shot fixes everything, or it's a total waste. Neither one is true.
Run through these five quick steps before you decide:
- Name your goal. Are you after vitamin C and zinc, fiber, or a small daily ritual? Pick the shot built for that job.
- Check your basics first. Sleep, water and real food come first. A shot can't cover for a skipped breakfast.
- Read the amounts. A shot that tells you exactly what's in it is a shot you can trust.
- Keep it to one a day. Especially the Immunity shot, because of the vitamin C math above.
- Try it for a few weeks. Keep it if it fits your routine. Drop it if it doesn't.
Step two is the one people skip. If you've ever grabbed a shot instead of breakfast and felt empty by mid-morning, the shot wasn't the problem. The empty tank was.
So pair it with something that has real fuel. A 24 oz protein shake carries 24g of protein with no added sugar. A protein smoothie carries 20g of protein and 5 to 10g of fiber. Add a shot to either and you've got a quick stop that actually holds you.
Think of a wellness shot like the sprinkles on a sundae. Fun, bright, a little extra. But you still need the ice cream underneath.
Timing is up to you. We're open until 7:30 PM on Wednesday and Thursday and from 8 AM to 5 PM on Saturday, so a shot can fit into a weekend errand run as easily as a weekday morning. Order ahead online and pick it up at the counter or curbside.
And if you want more than a shot, ask about the community health challenges we run at the shop.
You can see all three shots and what goes in each before you come in, or stop by 325 N Weber Rd and we'll walk you through them. No pressure, no hard sell.
A good wellness shot is small, honest and made fresh. That's the kind worth drinking.
Questions we get asked
Are wellness shots good for you?
They can be a useful small habit, as long as you know what's in the cup and how much. A good shot lists its ingredients and amounts, keeps sugar low, and doesn't promise to detox or cure anything. It works next to real food, water and sleep, not instead of them.
What's in Fuel Up's three wellness shots?
The Digestive shot has probiotics and 6g of fiber at 15 calories. The Collagen shot has collagen, biotin and vitamins A, C and E at 20 calories, with no sugar. The Immunity shot has 1,000mg of vitamin C, 10 mcg of vitamin D, 8mg of zinc and echinacea at 15 calories. Each one is made when you order it, at $5.10.
How many wellness shots can I have in a day?
For most people, one a day is plenty. The Immunity shot's 1,000mg of vitamin C is half the 2,000mg daily upper limit for adults set by the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, so keep it to one, and count any other vitamin C supplement you take that day.
Are Fuel Up's wellness shots bottled ahead of time?
No. Each shot is made when you order it, not poured from a bottle that's been sitting in a cooler. Call ahead at (708) 556-9800 and it'll be ready when you walk in.
Is a wellness shot worth $5.10?
It's worth it when you want what's in it. If you're after vitamin C, zinc and vitamin D in one quick stop, the Immunity shot delivers more than a day's vitamin C. If you're hoping a shot will stand in for breakfast, it won't, and that $5.10 is better spent next to a protein shake.
What should I pair with a wellness shot?
Something with real fuel in it. A 24 oz protein shake carries 24g of protein with no added sugar, and a protein smoothie carries 20g of protein and 5 to 10g of fiber. A shot on its own is a small add-on, not a meal.
